Durham Heritage Coast is an amazing coastline that runs from Hartlepool to Sunderland. Steep sided valleys known as denes appear as you walk along. Many of these are wooded and a number have footpaths that follow the streambed and can lead you far inland. One such example is at Castle Eden Dene where a large house surrounded by woodland walks and parkland gives you a glimpse into bygone times.

Open grassland on top of much of the coastline gives views up and down the coast. Access paths onto the beach take you down to enjoy a variety of beaches from sand dunes at Crimdon to cliffs in which caves and arches wait to be explored.

The kids web pages have background information on the geology, environment and people as well as places to go and some activity sheets that you can print off. Enjoy the webpages but also do go out and experience the Durham Heritage Coast.
